The Bernabéu, the setting for a historic day

The Bernabéu has once again established itself as a major global hub following its hosting of Pope Leo XIV’s historic visit, during which he met with Madrid’s diocesan community, marking the culmination of his three-day visit to the city. The stadium opened its doors to thousands of people who were able to share an unforgettable day and experience a unique event that goes far beyond the boundaries of sport.

The event combined religious ceremonies with a significant cultural and artistic component, making the Bernabéu one of the main venues for the papal visit to the capital. More than 70,000 people gathered in the stadium stands for an event that was broadcast live worldwide.

Leo XIV is following in the footsteps of John Paul II, who on 3 November 1982 also chose the Bernabéu for a mass gathering with young people.

This historic day once again demonstrated the Bernabéu’s impressive versatility in hosting all kinds of large-scale events. Its versatility and ability to transform in record time were key to the success of an event that posed a technological, audiovisual and logistical challenge.
